Something I always asked myself when listening to electronic music as a child was: How is this type of music made? In this music I did not listen to any guitar, drums, piano, they were simply sounds I had never heard in my life and that called me completely. Know the basic anatomy of a synthesizer (Part 1) Now, many years later, I would like to help all those people who want to introduce themselves to electronic music production and what I will share next will be the essential, to create any genre. The following points are totally necessary to start and start making electronic music: 1. A Computer Windows or Mac? The truth is that neither the operating system (Windows or MacOS) nor the computer brand does not matter, as long as it complies with some minimum requirements that the software you download needs (we will see later). Now, let's put a little more techies here, because it is important to take into account the computer's processor and RAM memory; an Intel i5 processor will be more than enough, although I recommend that if you have the opportunity, you get a computer with an Intel i7 processor. The same thing happens with RAM, with 4GB it is enough, but I recommend you get one that has 8GB, because as you progress with your productions, it may be that the sessions you are working on will be larger and will require more effort of your computer. Which computer to buy? The technology has advanced so fast that now you can get very powerful computers at an affordable price, of course everything will depend on the storage capacity, the processor and the RAM. I recommend you do a quick search on Amazon or BestBuy and compare them. You will surely find one that suits your needs and budget. 2. Software You will need a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation). A DAW is the program with which you will create your tracks. Although all are designed for the same, there is a wide variety and prices vary. The most used by electronic music producers are: Logic Pro X: this is the DAW developed by Apple, so if you want to start with Logic, you will necessarily need a Mac (sorry, Windows users). It is one of the most powerful DAWs. A large part of professional producers use it. It has a very clean user interface and integrates many virtual instruments. Its approximate price is $ 3,800.00 MXN in the App Store. Ableton Live: similarly, within the electronic scene is one of the most popular DAW's and with good reason, this program works on both Windows and Mac. Its user interface is more rustic than Logic, however it has the same capabilities and the same power, with one thing in their favor, you can also use it for live presentations. It is the only DAW that allows you to create a Live Set. Now, the price varies according to the version you want, Ableton Live Intro $ 100 USD (Approx. $ 1,900MXN), Ableton Live Standard $ 449 USD (Approx. $ 8,500 MXN) and Ableton Live Suite $ 749 USD (Approx. $ 14,000 MXN). The more expensive the software version brings more features. FL Studio: one more that is also one of the most used in the electronic scene. With a recently changed interface it now looks much more updated, equally compatible with most virtual instruments. This DAW is only compatible with Windows (sorry Mac users, although there is already a beta version for Mac). The prices of this program range between $ 99 USD (Approx. $ 1,900 MXN) and $ 899 USD (Approx. $ 17,000 MXN). I only mentioned these three because they are the most used in the electronic scene, although there are also: Pro Tools, Cubase, Reaper, Reason among others. Which one to buy? I recommend you see tutorials online and try several before deciding on one. It does not really matter which one you have or use, the most important thing is that you know it from head to toe, that you feel comfortable and that you know perfectly how it works, because this will help your work flow to be faster and have more ideas in a smaller amount of time. Virtual Instruments (VST's). Although most likely the DAW you buy will come with its factory instruments, it is important that you consider at this early stage to buy one or two virtual instruments, maximum. Of course you can buy more than two, but I recommend that they be few so that like your DAW, you handle them perfectly, you know what each button does and how to start creating your sounds. In electronic music the instruments that most predominate are the synthesizers and then I will give you a list of my favorites (does not mean they are the best, but they are the ones that I use the most): Spire (Reveal Sound) Sylenth1 (Lennar Digital) Hive (u-HE) Serum (Xfer Records) Nexus (reFX) Electronic Drumming Headset
